From Colombia to Canada: The Inspiring Journey of an Artist

As an artist, I believe that every artist has a story to tell. And I'm excited to share my story with you in this post. Here I'll be talking about my personal experiences and inspirations that have shaped my art. From my journey as an immigrant to the challenges and triumphs I've faced along the way, I'll be sharing the stories behind my art and how they have inspired me to create unique and meaningful works.

I hope that my story will captivate your attention and imagination, and that my art will speak to you in a way that is personal and meaningful.

Jose Cifuentes was no stranger to challenges. Born in Medellin, Colombia in 1984, Jose's mother Gloria made the hard decision of crossing the Rio Grande into Mexico when he was just a baby, hoping to start a new life with his father in New Jersey. But when she arrived, she found that her husband was unhappy and uninterested in starting a family even less a new life. Gloria made the difficult decision to return to Colombia, leaving Jose's father behind.

As the years passed and violence and instability increased in Colombia due to the rise of drug lord Pablo Escobar, Gloria knew that she had to take action to protect her son and provide him with a better life. She made the difficult decision to move back to the USA, and enrolled Jose in high school in Weehawken, New Jersey.

Despite the challenges he faced as an immigrant, Jose excelled as an artist and graduated with honors. He was offered a full-ride scholarship to study Fine Arts in college, but his life took a difficult turn when his father, a US citizen, asked him to overstay his visa so he could sign the paperwork needed to obtain citizenship. Tragically, Jose's father moved out of state and disappeared, leaving Jose an illegal immigrant at the age of 15 in the USA.

But Jose refused to let this setback define him. He persevered and graduated college with honors, and began practicing painting and illustrating. He exhibited his artworks in galleries and other venues, and gradually began to build a name for himself as an artist.

Despite the constant fear and stress of being an undocumented immigrant, Jose was determined to make a better life for himself and his loved ones. At the age of 25, he made the difficult decision to return to Colombia and start fresh. In Medellin, he fell in love with Erika, and together they founded beFREEclothing, a successful clothing brand based on Jose's art and personal lifestyle.

However, the brand suffered extortion from local gangs, forcing Jose and Erika to shut it down and seek a safer place to live. Today, they live in Toronto, Canada with their two dogs, Goya and Don Alpidio, and Jose continues to paint daily in his studio at the 401 Richmond building, drawing inspiration from his experiences as an immigrant to create unique and inspiring art that speaks to the beauty and resilience of the immigrant experience. Through his art, Jose hopes to connect with others who have faced similar challenges and to inspire them to pursue their dreams, no matter what obstacles they may face.
